Graston Technique

Graston, otherwise known as instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), is a skilled myofascial intervention used for soft-tissue treatment. It is based on the principles of James Cyriax cross-friction massage. It is applied using a stainless steel instrument with beveled edges that contour different anatomical locations. This method can be used in acute and chronic pain while allowing you to work deeper than a hand contact. It is used to manipulate the skin, myofascial, muscles, and tendons by various direct compressive stroke techniques. The technique evolved from Gua Sha used in Chinese medicine. Graston differs by different rationale, goals, and application methods. This breaks down fascial restrictions and scar tissues. It is a controlled micro trauma that causes inflammatory stimulus to the local soft tissue reabsorbing inappropriate fibrosis and scar tissues while cascading healing remodeling of the soft tissue. Unique uses are for scars, ligaments, tendons, and swelling reduction, among typical sprain/strains, and overuse injuries that are more common. Talk to Dr. Ryan Gessay or Dr. Gavin Jorns to ask if this technique would be helpful for your condition.

Cupping Technique

Cupping is used with silicone or plastic cups on the skin to decompress the tissues beneath the cup as well as enhance blood flow to these areas. The cup can be held in a place or moved around to increase the size of the treatment area. Used for common complaints in the office such as neck pain and low back pain, it can also be effective for headaches, tendinitis, scars, and other areas sensitive to pressure. This can improve the metabolism of the skin tissue, stimulate blood flow to muscles and improve lymphatic drainage, increase secretion of synovial fluid to the joints to help them move with better glide, stimulate sensitive nerves of the skin to decrease local pain and improve your autonomic nervous system to relax the state of the body. Call Tune Chiropractic today to see if this can help relieve the discomfort stopping you from doing what you love to do.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a procedure utilizing microfiliment needles and inserting the needle through the skin into the muscle belly, tendon or ligament. The primary aim is in the muscle is the myofascial trigger points which are hyperirritable spots located in a taut band of the muscle. Active trigger points can cause local or referred pain and overly sensitive areas. Dry needling can reduce these symptoms and decrease pain caused by decreased blood flow to these areas. This helps with the balance of tissues in the area decreasing muscle tension. Dry needling can be used to reduce swelling, increased healing in tendons, muscles and ligaments. Studies have shown this to be effective with adjustments for headaches and shoulder pain, although we see results with a mutitude of conditions. Electrical dry needling can be utilized to for pain decreasing effects neurologically through the release of different neurochemicals in the body.

McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis Method

McKenzie Method is a comprehensive approach to alleviating spine and joint pain. McKenzie Method is a classification system that allows the chiropractor to categorize his patients into certain sub-groups for improved recovery time. These three sub-groups of McKenzie are Derangement, Dysfunction, and Postural syndromes. Depending on the diagnosis through this method, the patient is sent home with exercises to speed up the healing and help the adjustments maintain correction. This technique helps you understand the source of the pain whether it is the joint or the tissues around the joint. If symptoms are felt in the arms or legs, these movements can help “centralize” the pain or reduce the amount of arm or leg pain that is felt. If you have numbness, tingling or weakness this technique can be highly effective in reducing pain and improving function. Dr. Gavin Jorns specializes in McKenzie Method so call Tune to see if this method can help you with your pain.
